The 3 main soil types are loam, clay & sand. To find out your soil type follow these steps:
- Take a handful of moist but not wet soil
- Squeeze
- Open your hand & see the results
Loam – it will hold its shape & when given a light poke it will crumble
Clay – it will hold its shape & will not move when poked
Sand – it will fall apart as soon as you open your hand
Loam
Covers all the soils in between sandy & clay soils. This type of soil is considered to be the best soil to grow most plants in. ‘True Loam’, the exact point between clay and sandy soil, is hard to find as loam can have properties of both sandy & clay soil. Clay

Sandy
