Dams ensure livestock is fed, crops grow & your farm continues to run without wanting for water. Recognising the early warning signs of a leaking dam can save you thousands of litres & significant repair & running costs.
Here are the most common indicators that your dam needs attention:
1. Rapid Water Level Drop
If your water level is dropping more than the average expected by evaporation & the dam hasn’t been using to pump your water supply elsewhere, a leak has likely formed.
2. Wet Ground Below the Wall
Persistent damp patches at the toe of the dam wall often signal seepage. These can turn into a flow of water is the leak is not remedied.
3. Cracks in the Embankment
Surface cracks can become leak pathways under pressure. They can also continue to spread beneath the waterline.
4. Slumping or Soft Spots
These indicate soil movement or erosion cause by escaping water. If ignored, the movement can result in a complete wall collapse.
5. Animal Burrows
Wombats, rabbits & yabbies create tunnels that water follows. These may begin small but will begin to expand overtime.
6. Unusual Vegetation Growth
Greener vegetation patches below & around the dam may indicate water is seeping out of your dam & feeding water to those areas.
7. Water Drops Quickly After Rain
If your dam empties faster than expected post-rain, internal leaks are likely active.
Early sealing prevents these signs from becoming structural damage.
How Do I Fix The Leak?
Water is one of the most valuable assets on your property. Losing it silently to seepage affects livestock health, crop performance & operational flexibility. Water$ave Dam Sealers provide a proven, DIY solution for sealing leaking earth dams without draining or digging.
Which Dam Sealer Do I Need?
Water$ave Dam Sealers includes two products, Water$ave Plug & Water$ave Seep. Both applied directly to the water surface by hand or small fertiliser spreader, completely DIY.
Water$ave Plug is best suited for dams with coarse or rocky soil with the leaking coming from the base. Also suited to leaks causing the water level to drop by more than 150mm (6inches) a week or when there is a visible flow of water outside the dam.
Water$ave Seep is best suited for dams with sandy/fine soil, slower leaks or leaks in the side of the dam. Also suited to dams with wet area but no flowing water outside the dam.
